At the Edge, oil and pencil on paper, 2018
Artist Statement
Art is essential for me to express what I can only share through a visual language. I’ve always been intrigued by color, mark-making, and movement. My paintings begin with a memory of a color, an emotion, or simply by making marks. Working on paper with palette knife, oil paint, pencils, sandpaper, and other materials, I add and remove material. I’ve also recently begun making monotypes and collages as another way to interpret my vision. Each piece of art feels like choreography or a music composition as I interact with the space. References to landscape may emerge or the work may remain abstract. Each piece evokes a sense of place yet allows the viewer to decide what that place might be. Whatever the outcome, the process of discovery is both challenging and fulfilling.
